Tuesday, 25 August 2015

Entries closing next Monday 31 August – 2015 Australian Championships Carnival –

Enter now and join the large contingent of orienteers from all parts of Australia and beyond already heading to Ballarat for the 2015 Australian Championships Carnival, from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 4 October. No late entries for championships classes will be available after midnight on Monday 31 August. Enter-on-the-day will be available for limited courses at selected events, but these will not be championship classes – they are designed to allow newcomers to try the sport, and fellow travellers to step out and smell the magnificent messmate and peppermint eucalyptus trees of the Creswick Forest, close to Ballarat.

Ballarat in September offers something for everyone, including the non-orienteer in your life:

  • Excellent open-forest orienteering in gold mining terrain, within half an hour’s drive on good roads.
  •  Urban, bush, National Orienteering League and world ranking events – 9 events to choose from in 9 days.
  •  Gracious, sophisticated and thriving gold fields and spa country regional centre, population 93,000.
  • Home of Dr Blake Mysteries (ABC Television);  Dr Blake walks and Dr Blake tribute dinner.

·         Major tourist attractions: Sovereign Hill historic mining village, Australian Museum of Democracy at Eureka Stockade, Gold Museum, Botanic Gardens, Art Gallery of Ballarat (2015 Archibald portrait exhibition from Saturday 3 October), Lake Wendouree environs and more.

·         Easy access – Allow an hour and a half by car from Melbourne or Bendigo, or about 3 hours by train from Southern Cross Station (check train times). Late starts on Saturday 26 September (Vic Middle) and Friday 2 October (Aust Sprint); local bus transport to events (must be pre-booked on Eventor).
