Adventures with Maps

Don't stand on the sidelines - orienteering is a sport that the whole family can participate in and enjoy together. If you want to be more than a chauffeur, caterer or clothes washer, get outdoors with a map. Every event offers a different adventure: choose yours!

Colchester

Thursday, 29 January 2015

A large crowd came to Colchester, a map that has been well used in winter but hardly ever in daylight.  It's one of those maps where you need to keep your thumb firmly in place, as it's very easy to find yourself somewhere other than where you thought you were.  The big hill in the northeast adds another level of complication.  Unable to see an obvious route, my strategy mirrored many others - head to 17 and hope that something would reveal itself.  It didn't.  Which means course setter Rick did an excellent job!

Once again Andrew was the fastest of the A runners, followed by Bryan, Rhys, Kristian and Simon.  Tim J earned a breakthrough win on B, ahead of Lanita, Bruce, Jay and Peter M. Keeping it in the family, Oliver and Darryl took out C course, with Phil, Mark and Janine rounding out the top 5.  Buzz, Ray and Pete led the D course competitors home, while Jen and co won E course from me and Pat.  Mark took out PW with 60 points, nudging out Tony on 59, and a bunch on 58 that included Graham, Steven and Barry.

Overall things are starting to settle, but there were a few changes this week: on A1, Rhys and Alex swapped spots, and Paul is only 1 point behind.   Chris and Rick also exchanged positions on A2.  Lanita moved up to third on B1, and Philiip moved up to equal second with Geoff on B3.  Peter K now holds third spot on C2, while Ray moved up to take equal third with Torren on D1.  On PW, there was a shakeup on PW1 where Mark zoomed into top spot ahead of Ron and Barry, but there were no changes in any of the other PW divisions.

February is Park and Street Champs month!  The first Wednesday qualifier is on Feb 11 at Nortons Park (we forgot to mark this one in the printed fixture) followed on Feb 18 at Heyington Heights. You can also qualify in other series.  The Champs are age based, so check the web page and make sure you are competing on the correct course for your age category.  You must be a paid-up member of an orienteering club to take part in the Final on Thursday Feb 26 at Springthorpe - talk to a club member, or check out how to join here.

See you next week at Blackburn Creeklands.  Please note that parking at the scout hall is limited. You may be able to use the bowls club car park opposite, but there is NO parking on Pakenham Street, so be prepared to park in nearby side streets, at the direction of event organisers.
