Canterbury Trails

Sunday, 2 July 2017

The last Autumn series event was held on the Canterbury Trails maps, starting in the confusing little triangle just east of the railway line.  I wasn't the only one who had a "Vortex of Doom" moment leaving the start - being 180 degrees out did not help my attempts to get to my first control!  Martin set a good brain puzzle. I realised afterwards that the 5 pointers were gettable with the right strategy at the start, and careful planning. Hindsight is a wonderful thing ...

Well done to the six A course runners who got 70 points - Bryan, Ian, Steven, Tim, Andrew and Ken.  A big win on B to Tim who was well in front of Jay, Ian, Bruce and Peter D. On PW, Mark and Ron both got 59 points but Mark was back first to claim the win. Barry, Kay and Len made up the top five.

On A1, Bryan claimed a 6 point win over Ian, who finished just one point ahead of Paul - Tim was unlucky to be just 2 points outside the top three.  Andrew won B2, with Vic moving up into second, and Rick just one point in arrears in third.  Arthur was a clear winner on A3 over Roger and Lauris, with Ray not quite able to bridge the gap and steal a place.  Dale wrapped up A4 ahead of Margi and Peter.

Ian claimed B1 from Nick, with Tim making a late charge to pip Bruce and Jay for third - in fact only 6 points separated 2nd from 5th! B2 was not quite so close, with Peter M finishing ahead of Reg and Pete.  I was the B3 winner, with Suzy second and John third, but both were only just in front of Pam and Libby.
Dave finished PW1 on an unbeatable 800 points, while Mark's win this week was enough to move him into second ahead of Len in third. Helen, Kay and Barry were all untroubled on PW2, while Ian won PW3 comfortably from Noel and Pat, who managed to keep her one point margin over Gwennyth. Mike took out PW4, ahead of Henk and Di who tied for second.

And so another series comes to an end - congratulations to the winners and placegetters.  Prizes will be awarded next Wednesday night at Bayswater - join us for dinner after the event, at the Bayswater Hotel (which has a good seniors discount, and a range of vegetarian and gluten free options).

When: 7:00pm Wednesdays; all year round

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.  Bring a watch, a drink, and a torch for winter events (late March-mid October).

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In winter, there are 2 courses for runners.  These are Score format, where you visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time, with the aim of earning as many points as possible.  Times are 60 mins or 45 mins.  There is also a 60 min Score course for Power Walkers.

In summer, there are 5 runners courses ranging from 2.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time).
