This was a really interesting course set by Steven - most controls were north of Springield Road, eliminating the need to cross a busy road; the handful of controls to the south were only for the brave (or foolhardy).  This map has a street layout that leads to deception - controls can look really close together but in reality be a long way apart.  So there was certainly a lot to think about, and it paid to lay your plans at the beginning.- as opposed to my usual tactic of going to the nearest control, then the next, then the next, until time is almost up.

Andrew was the only runner to score 70 points - Colin, Geoff, Ian and Tim all settled for 67.  You have to start thinking differently when you need to drop controls, so good job by Steven to shake things up a bit.  On B, Tim scored a huge 63, with Bruce and Ian both on 56, and Denise and Graham next best on 50.  Mark topped PW with a score of 55, just in front of Tony and Dave on 54 apiece, and Kay, Ron and Helen on 50.

Everyone has been placed into their divisions, so if you were a winner last series, you've been promoted. Things are very close on A1 with Andrew just in front, Ian right behind in second, and Paul in third, but with Tim, Geoff and Colin all in a bunch just outside the placings.  On A2, Rick and Hugh are tied for first, and Martin is only a point clear of Merv. Vanessa has a nice lead on A3 from Lauris and Stuart. Tim has claimed the early lead on B1 from Ian and Bruce; Graham is out in front of me and Pete on B2; and Libby leads John and Suzy on B3.  PW1 sees Dave in first, Helen second and Mark third. Kay, Lyn and Bernie are the placeholders on PW2, while Noel Mike and Pat are the top three on PW3. Suzanne leads Di and Bev on PW4.

See you next Wednesday at MitchelHill.

Eastern Series Information

About this series:

Where: Eastern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Wednesdays; all year round

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.  Bring a watch, a drink, and a torch for winter events (late March-mid October).

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In winter, there are 2 courses for runners.  These are Score format, where you visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time, with the aim of earning as many points as possible.  Times are 60 mins or 45 mins.  There is also a 60 min Score course for Power Walkers.

In summer, there are 5 runners courses ranging from 2.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time).
