Bulleen's Ups and Downs

Saturday, 5 August 2017

Does anyone else find that they always go the same way on certain maps?  For as long as I can remember, I have always set off clockwise on Bulleen's Ups and Downs, probably to defer the inevitable slog up those big eastern hills - and I always enjoy the freewheeling downhill back to the finish.  This time I told myself firmly that I was going to break with tradition by heading anticlockwise - starting with 7, 12, 16 and 19.  After that things got tricky ... every control needed a decision made.  Our course setters Annie and Bernie did a great job, and I was still trying to solve the puzzle right until my final control.

This week's A course winner was Tim, and it's been great to see the victories spread around this series, with five different winners so far.  Andrew, Ian, Steven and Colin were in the top five, all on 70 points.  Nick was too quick on B course, scoring 63 points, with Ian on 62, Tim on 61 (after overlooking no 11), then Jay and Bruce all well ahead of the rest of us.  Tony topped PW with 60 points, ahead of Dave, Mark, Kay and Helen.

It's week five already!  Ian has retained his narrow lead on A1, Tim moved to second and Paul is third, but there are only a few points separating the top six or seven. Rick has amassed a sizeable lead over Martin and Hugh on A2, with Alicia also showing good form.  Roger roared into first place on A3, a whisker ahead of Stuart and again not much to choose between the field.  Tim is still well clear on B1 with Bruce second and Peter D third.  I consolidated my lead on B2 over Pete and Greg, but don't expect to keep it with the likes of both Grahams and Jonathan all doing well. B3 remained unchanged with none of the contenders in attendance. Kay has a huge lead on PW2 with Bernie and Ilze second and third, and Lyn in good form too.
NOel movbed further ahead on PW3, while Mike gained two more points on Pat; Allan and Gwennyth are not far behind.  Suzanne overhauled Bev on PW4, while Marc claimed third place.

Next Wednesday's event is at Glenferrie, a really fun inner-eastern map. Enjoy!

About this series:

Where: Eastern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Wednesdays; all year round

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.  Bring a watch, a drink, and a torch for winter events (late March-mid October).

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In winter, there are 2 courses for runners.  These are Score format, where you visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time, with the aim of earning as many points as possible.  Times are 60 mins or 45 mins.  There is also a 60 min Score course for Power Walkers.

In summer, there are 5 runners courses ranging from 2.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time).
