Heany Park

Friday, 30 June 2017

Heany Park is one of my favourite maps (ok maybe not so much the actual Heany Park bit, which has a few too many contours for my liking).  Course setter Ainslie is known for her sometimes unconventional course layouts, and this time she gave us four sets of clusters. The trick was not to turn around too early, then leave yourself short.  I did exactly that, but then accepted the challenge of making it back before the short course cutoff time - successfully!  Normally I'm 2-3 minutes over.  The great fun with Target-O is when you make the decision to "go for it", and then you have to commit - it makes for an adrenalin rush through those last vital controls as the seconds tick away, and a very satisfying feeling when you achieve those extra 4 points.

Series 1 is now concluded, and our lucky winners will receive their prizes next WEDNESDAY night - during our after-event dinner at the Bayswater Hotel.  Congratulations to Long Run winners Vic, Ray and Lauris - Vic had 6 wins and 4 second places to win comfortably, while Ray was only a point clear of Lauris.  Ian managed to beat the Short course cutoff 7 times so he has earned his prize there.  On PW, Phil won 8 times out of 8, with Ros second and Pete third.  On the Score course, Steven had a perfect average of 100, but didnt get 8 events, so the win went to Andrew, with Warwick and Rick runners up.  Dave won PW on 9 of 10 occasions, Gwennyth finished second, just one point ahead of Suzanne in third.

Series 2 gets underway next Monday at Westgarth.  We will be starting from inside the school grounds, so look for parking signs.  See you there!

Monday Night Series

About this series:

Where: Southern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Mondays; all year round

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.  Bring a watch, a drink, and a torch for winter events (late March-mid October).

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In summer (October-March), there are 4 runners courses ranging from 3.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time).

Enquiries: tel 0409 959 673 (Annie)

In winter (March-October), there are 25 controls marked on the map.  Choose one of two formats - a 60 minute Score course (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time, aiming to score as many points as possible), or a "Target" course, where you aim to achieve a target score between 4 and 36 points.

Enquiries: 0409 135 020 (Debbie)
