Victorian Sprint Champs – Congratulations to the Winners

This was the last major event of 2022, on a fantastic new map of a top class sprint area!

Richard Goonan put in a huge effort to map the school, obtain permission, and plan the courses.  The double sided map was fairly routine to begin with, but what a surprise when it was turned over – a very clever “cat’s cradle” of tight legs around a series of small buildings and garden beds, was a great test of the ability to keep focus.  As always in a Sprint, there were some close results – two class winners were decided by 6 seconds – and a few surprises.  The talking point was the map change control, which caught some competitors on the wrong side of the fence, in full spectator view.
The Mens Cavill Cup went to Aston Key; keeping it in the family, Tash Key kept hold of the Womens Cavill Cup for another year – but there was only 39 seconds separating the top five women – incredible racing!
Taking home the chocolates (literally) in the Age Group Championships were:
Women: Lydia Stott, Ella Maja Lang, Maya Bennette, Sophie Taverna, Heather O’Donnell, Anne Arthur, Janine Steer, Philippa Lohmeyer-Collins, Libby Meeking
Men: Xander Greenhalgh, Nicolas Mousley, Callum White, Ricky Thackray, Cian O’Reilly, Tim Hatley, Peter Cusworth, Peter Dalwood, Eofy Greenhan
Thanks to Richard, as well as to event advisor Ted van Geldermalsen, organiser David Jaffe, and the crew of volunteers from a range of clubs. The event was a fundraiser for the OV Schools program, and money will help buy new equipment to help meet increasing demand for orienteering in primary and secondary schools across Victoria.
