Geelong Street-O   -   Hopping Mad in the Heartland

It was a beautiful evening for Geelong Street-O last Thursday – sunny, with a light cooling breeze and a smattering of cloud coverage.

Sofie had set a course that incorporated the hallowed grounds from St Mary’s cathedral in the city to the Kardinia Park precinct. The variable street layout and railway arcing through the course ensured that all participants had to have their navigation skills switched on. Once again our numbers were solid, which tells us that we are delivering a product that the majority of our participants want to return to.

With Luke again absent with illness, it was Tony McR that dominated a strong field in A grade, with Toby C and Ed S following.

Matt P warmed up for a weekend event with a strong win in B grade. A calf strain put an end to Glenn M’s ambitions for a high placing, which left the opening for myself to come in second followed by Anna Z (plus dog !!) and Don F.

Brad S made a return to Street-O with a first placing in C grade, to lead home a steadily improving Damien W, followed by Melissa B and Taron and Natasha P.
The grouping of Frank, Ged and Laura entered as C grade but enjoyed themselves so much that they covered a B grade course of 17 controls.

Heather and John had D grade to themselves, enjoying the opportunity to catch up on their week’s activities.

The change of leaders for the Walkers continued again this week. The one’s to step up to the podium for this event were Brigitte and Scott A (plus dog) with a massive 60 points. The grouping of Vanice K, Di P and Isobelle E (58 pts) were next, followed by the ever consistent Des G and the grouping of Elna E, Linda McM and Linden Y (all on 57 pts).

So what was there to be hopping mad about ??

-  Glenn could be understandably mad about sustaining an injury.
- I was pretty mad with myself for getting an extra control (second time this week !!).
- Don F wasn’t happy with his navigation.

You couldn’t be mad about the considerable time and ongoing efforts that all of our course setters, cake and watermelon suppliers (thanks Joyce !!), control collectors, equipment managers, and so on, provide with a smile. With all of your support we’ll continue to offer an activity that is inclusive, rewarding and enjoyable.

Our last event for this year will start from the Canoe Club at Balyang Reserve. I have another commitment (singing carols !!), so won’t be there. Heather as co-ordinator and Luke (course setter) will ensure that all participants have an event to enjoy.

Cheers,

Alan Cooke
